Report from SUE MARSH

Despite the uncertainty of whether snow would descend on the region again, 8 DDSC swimmers (Ben Gallant, Anthony Redfern, Ruth Hadley, Aaron Biddle, Sam Cave, Sophie Groves, Sam Gearey and Tim Quiney travelled to Wolverhampton for the Stourbridge Crystal Open Meet on Sunday 10th Jan.

With approximately 30 clubs competing, some travelling from as far as Carlisle, our swimmers did tremendously well and did DDSC proud. In fact we finished as 3rd overall best performing club!

Our swimmers achieved this by clocking up 28 top three placings (out of a total of 43 swims), 20 PBs were smashed in doing so, 4 more county times gained, and Sam Cave achieved a qualification time for the Midland Regional Age Group Championships in the 200IM event.

Ruth and Sam managed 12 first places between them of which 6 were overall 1st placings (Sam 4, Ruth 2), so more display cabinets are needed to put the crystal goblets on show at their homes!  Sophie and Aaron weren't far behind them with 4 and 5 top three placings respectively in their age group and Sam G not far behind them with 2 top five placings.  In the 11yr Girls 50FS, Ruth, Sophie & Sam G were placed 1st, 2nd, and 4th!!

Anthony and Ben had 5 top three placings between them although 1st place was just out of reach by finger tips.  Anthony knocked a humungous 8 seconds off his 200BK time, only then to be criticised by Sue for not putting more effort in!

Proof that size doesn't matter, it's how the swimmer makes the stroke effective (though totally legal of course), resulted in Tim achieving 3 top six placings (3rd, 5th, 6th) sometimes against swimmers almost twice his size.

All in all, it was a fantastic performance by these 8 swimmers, and they did their club proud!

Fully detailed results of the day can be found on the Stourbridge Website.
