Officials Training

At Droitwich Dolphins we like to pay attention to the training and development of our swimming officials so that our galas can be officiated to the highest standard possible, and so that our swimmers get the support they need and deserve.

To this end, I intend to co-ordinate another round of training and mentoring for our parents who would like to put themselves forward. It doesn't matter if you've been officiating at the club for months/years already, or if you've never officiated any galas - you are more than welcome to join the programme.

By becoming an ASA trained and qualified official, you are qualified to officiate at internal championship galas, external league galas, county and regional galas, and beyond.... however there is no obligation on you to give up any more time than you can afford. For some officials, this means working every weekend at galas, for others it means doing the minimum possible to retain registration..... but for most, myself included, it represents an opportunity to give something back to the sport at those galas at which we would already be present as our children are participating.

The overhead required to undertake the training is minimal - most of it is done through mentoring during galas at which you would already be present if your children are swimming.

Lastly, this is not difficult. The starting point is Judge Level 1 (Timekeeper and Inspector of Turns).... and believe me, with a little focus and attention to detail, ANYONE can achieve this. Beyond that is Judge Level 2 (Stroke and Finish), then Starter, and then Referee. Many people who undertake J1 training at this stage will want to go on to complete J2. A few will continue to Starter, and for those who stick around in the sport long enough, they may progress to Referee.

To set a little context here - our club has around 200 swimmers, yet we only have SIX qualified officials (one at J1, two at J2, two at Starter, and one Referee)

If you are interested and would like any further information, please contact me using the Contact tab on this site, or grab me at the pool.

Thanks

Steve
