September 12th 2009 - Wolverhampton Swimming Pool
Following an excellent set of performances by the DDSC junior swimming team during the 2009 Nuneaton Junior Swimming League culminating in a 4th place finishing position in Division Two, the team attended the league's Division Two final on September 12th at Wolverhampton.
During the season the team has been stretched in many areas due to lack of depth, but with outstanding team spirit, and many swimmers having to cover swims above their age group, they have come through in style. However against much bigger squads in the final, that lack of depth became evident.
That doesn't mean though that Droitwich didn't do themselves justice. Once again they were the loudest and best team on poolside. Their spirit before, during, and after the gala was tremendous, and their singing and chanting drew early applause from all quarters.
Performances in the pool were strong, however against competition that will probably do very well in Division One, and who were able to bring much larger squads, DDSC struggled in many events, eventually finishing in 5th place - just outside the promotion places.
That said, there were some magnificant individual performances from Sam Cave, Ruth Hadley, Sophie Groves, and Anthony Redfern, all of whom exceeded standing league records in their individual events. Cave, Hadley, and Groves, along with Tim Quiney, and the boys 11U Freestyle Relay team, all achieved excellent first place fnishes.
This has been a great season for DDSC juniors, and they fully deserved their place at the final. These swimmers are the future of DDSC - with the form shown this season, I sense good things to come for this club!!
